There's nothing like a summer bounty of fresh fruits to enjoy. But what do you do when you have more berries than you can eat before they go bad? This easy blackberry mush is the perfect way to use up extra berries while enjoying a taste of summer well after the season ends.
Growing up in the South, my grandmother always had some kind of fruit mush concoction simmering on the stove. Whether it was peaches, berries, or whatever was in season, the sweet and comforting smell would fill the kitchen. Her secret was using day-old biscuits or crackers to soak up the fruit juices until a mushy texture formed.
This blackberry mush captures those fond memories and couldn't be simpler to make. Just toss blackberries and sugar in a saucepan and cook until soft and juicy. Then crumble in leftover biscuits and continue cooking until mushy. The result is a delicious sweet-tart dessert or snack that's as easy as it is satisfying.
Best of all, this recipe is extremely flexible. Feel free to substitute your favorite berries or use saltines instead of biscuits for a sweet-salty twist. It's the perfect way to enjoy a taste of summer long after the season ends. Give it a try - I promise you'll be transported back to those warm days spent in grandma's kitchen.
